Dual Diagnosis Program: Dual Diagnosis and Its Treatment

How does an individual become addicted to drugs or alcohol? Why does he start using it in the first place? How does he fall prey to these harmful substances? It has been said that there is a reason behind everything and understanding ‘the why’ behind this problem can actually help you find a solution. Furthermore, addiction can potentially affect anyone even in the absence of genetic inclination for addiction or alcoholism or environmental risk. Some just try out once and then start using it regularly. However it’s not as simple for everyone.

According to doctors, the existence of mental disorder in an individual can lead or enhance alcohol or drug addiction. The disorder and the dependency together make recovery a difficult task but yes recovery is still possible. This twofold problem has been referred to as dual diagnosis and can be explained as follows:

Person suffering from a mental condition finds it hard to cope with life and therefore turns to alcohol or drugs. Then what happens? In the beginning he gets some relief but with time the situation goes from bad to worse.
Say, a person uses alcohol or drugs for fun without realizing he has this mental condition. As time passes his dependency grows along with his mental problem.

What can you do? The best way to help yourself or your loved one in that case would be by finding a good facility i.e. drug rehab or an alcohol rehab that also offers treatments for dual diagnosis. Why is this necessary? When we talk about mental disorders we mean all sorts of disorders such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders and schizophrenia. Such patients not only require proper treatment but also professional care. Furthermore a good drug or an alcohol rehab can ensure successful recovery.

Detoxification is a process when the blood is purified and all traces of drugs or alcohols are removed from the system. It is during this process that a body experiences some serious withdrawal symptoms which may prove to be dangerous for the patient if one fails to provide proper medical attention. This lasts for 60 to 90 days depending on the patient. Once all harmful remnants of these substances are removed, the next challenge is to find the root cause of addiction and ensure lasting recovery through traditional and that is best suited for the patient. These treatments may comprise of taking medications, individual counseling, group counseling, family involvement therapy and such others. Rehab centers now offer gender and age specific treatments which are found to be more effective way of treating patients. Furthermore, these treatments not only cure them of their addiction but also help to provide relief for their mental condition.

When patients step up to ask for help for their alcohol or drug dependency the chances of their recovery increases by many folds. If a person is in complete denial of their addiction problem it becomes very difficult to help them. But that doesn’t mean we should give up on them. Showing them how much we care about their health and happiness may make them consider.
