Thoughts on Physical Therapy?

Question by Mario D: Thoughts on ?
I am going to school To get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy, and I was wondering what people who have gone through PT have to say about it.

I worked in a clinic as a tech over the summer and was called a “Physical Terrorist” when trying to bring one lady to therapy. So I want to hear it from all angles now, not just the negative aspects.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

PT is a skill. You will be dealing with a full spectrum of people, those who will call you a physical terrorist, some who will scream and shout at you and then those who like me realize that the PT can only show you what to do to help, but only the person: me can do it! Like I go to PT, they show me a set of exercises and I leave go home and repeat those exercises in order to get better. However, many people think it is easier to moan, groan and pop a pill, so you have to also learn how to motivate people and that is the hardest part. I recently attended a Pain Self-Management Course, some 19 people with Arthritis, all older than me attended. We went around the Class to figure out why and what they expected from this course. It came to me and I said ‘Well if I decide I am just going to allow my health to run my life, I may as well check out now. I want to have a life alongside my health condition and if that means I learn to run a marathon, then so be it. The alternative is to stay in bed, end up with bed sores, have a bag to drain my urine and a diaper to hold my feaces and I really do not want that, I want to be independent.’ The other 18 people, were kinda shocked because they had not realised how they could, might end up! Self-motivation, not many have it, hence being called a Physicial Terrorist. All you can do is show them what to do, but you cannot do it for them, the rest is up to them. Best of Luck
