Chemical dependency is viewed as a disease and can happen to anyone at any time. Dependency is similar to some other medical problems; however, there are some extreme differences. For example, chemical dependency is chronic meaning it supposedly cannot be cured. Dependency is treatable and can improve over time, but once a person has developed this, it is with them forever. We have found ways to minimize the physical, emotional and social problems that are accompanied by chemical dependency. The most obvious method is to stop abusing drugs and/or alcohol completely. Recovery from substance abuse is crucial because a person who continues to abuse drugs and/or alcohol, will almost certainly suffer from traumatic health problems and sometimes death.
