Whitney Houston Drug Abuse: Whitney Houston – the Pop Music World Diva

Last week we heard the accidental death of pop world music diva Whitney Elizabeth Houston. Her sudden death gave a shock to the entire music world. She was laid to rest near her birthplace in Newark, New Jersey. Dozens of fans took part in the procession carrying Houston’s body to the Forest Lawn cemetery in Westfield.

A glace through her life –

Whitney was born into a talented singing family in 1963. She was the youngest of the three children. Her mother is a famous gospel singer. Famous pop singer Dionne Warwick is her cousin and Aretha Franklin was her Godmother.

She spends her school days at Mount Saint Dominic Academy. As a teenager, she used to sing in nightclubs where her mother was a performing artist. By the age of fourteen, she became a backup singer of the Zager Band single ‘Life’s a Party’ and then of Chaka Khan’s band ‘I’m Every Woman’. She started her modeling career during the same time. Her good looks and raw talent helped her to pursue more in the show business.

During one of her performances in a nightclub in New York, Clive Davis, the famous producer, heard her singing. He was tempted towards Whitney’s singing and offered a recording. Two years after signing the deal, Whitney released her hit singles like ‘You Give Good Love’, ‘Saving All My Love For You’ and ‘How Will I Know’. With the release of the album, she became the first African-American singer to enter the MTV charts. Her voice got praises from everywhere, as it was a five octave range voice. The sales of the album from this solo singer break all the records. She sold nearly 25 million copies of her album.
And Whitney was ranked number one in the Billboard 200.

Following the blockbuster hit of her first album, she released her second studio album, Whitney. Though some critics called it as a rephrasing of her first album, Whitney’s second album also got immense popularity. Her ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ was ranked number one in the Billboard chart. The albums next three singles also gained top positions. These continuous successes make her the highest earning African-American woman in the world. Among the highest earning entertainers, she was the third after Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy.

Her third release was “I’m Your Baby Tonight”. Though it didn’t hit number one on the Billboard 200, some 12 million copies of it was sold all over the world. During that time, she acted in the film ‘The Bodyguard’. The biggest hit in her career was the seminal ‘I Will Always Love You’. This solo song stayed at the top of the UK charts for 10 weeks and over 35 million copies of the soundtrack album was sold.

In the same year Whitney got married to Bobby Brown, a singer whom she met at the Soul Train Music awards. Then she gave birth to her only child Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown in 1993. The marriage life of Whitney was one of the most tumultuous relationships in the history of Hollywood. The couples deteriorating relationship was plagued by rumors of violence and drug abuse. In 2007 they filed a joint divorce petition, and the 15 year old marriage life was officially ended.

Whitney’s career life and family life were badly affected with the marriage and the consequences followed with that. After marriage her whole attitude was changed. She began to behave in a rude and arrogant manner after getting addicted to cocaine, marijuana and other drugs. In 2009, she tried to come out of her bad girl character. She produced an album, I Look to You. When her life was going in a good pace, there comes a sudden turn. On February 11, 2012, she was found dead in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room. According to reports, a mixture of alcohol and prescription drugs played a role in her death.
