Alcohol Issues: College Drinking and Alcoholism Issues

Nearly 30 years later, a little movie called ‘Animal House’ is still thought of as the model for how college life should be. This means parties, drinking, campus streaking and continuing to drink beer and alcohol. While it may seem amusing to anyone entering adulthood and possibly away from home, the truth is that college-age alcohol use is on the rise. In recent years, many college campuses have taken different measures to curtail underage drinking as well as deal with driving while intoxicated. Yet, it is impossible for a handful of designated persons driving to be everywhere at once. At this point, a collaborative effort between college administrators, students and the surrounding community would most likely bring the best results to curtail college alcoholism issues.

According to National Institute on (NIAAA), adults between the ages of 18 – 29 have the highest rate of alcohol-related problems. The NIAAA also recommends that adults under age 21 not drink at all. This would be practical, especially where studies are concerned as it is almost impossible for anyone to focus while recovering from a hangover. If a college student feels that the stress of having to one day go out in the real world is really scary and that the antidote is binge drinking keep in mind that the conseuquences of binge drinking can be as frightening. Some schools have a strong rule in terms of suspension and probation. Also, having to repeat courses or drop out will definitely not make life better.

While a college student may not be an alcoholic – or someone who feels they cannot function normally without having a drink – in these times, having impaired judgment can have its risks when not in the company of a responsible adult. Violent acts such as rape, drunk driving, assault which can lead to death or serious injuries tend to be linked to alcohol or drug use.

Help for alcohol abuse involves honesty, support groups, counseling and in some cases inpatient treatment options. The good thing is that there is much more energy for change when one is young than after decades of a set pattern of behavior.
