personally, no.. at least nothing as bad as when I was out there getting loaded all the time.. lol

but just like with anything, there are going to be people who have a bad time… keep in mind that there are no professionals in AA, every person there is an alcoholic…

so, is it worth ditching the whole thing because of afew people you dont like? no, just find another meeting…

AA is basically like a cult. It is not founded on well established medical or psychiatric principles. It is based on the beliefs of the founders. They have done a great job acting like they have a high success rate, but they refuse to publish what the rates actually are. From the few documents that have leaked, their success rate is about 10%, just about the same as most other methods of quitting including cold turkey.

I have known many people who have gone into AA. And at best they may stop drinking but are trapped in this cycle of dependency on the group. Some will even go to meetings several times a day. A fundamental belief in AA is you are powerless, and must submit to a higher power to save you. They also stress continually going to meetings essentially for life.

The reality is many alcoholics are actually clinically depressed and not getting any treatment. They are self medicating with alcohol. Alcohol is not the root of the problem, and addressing the drinking by itself solves nothing. That is why they have so many relapses. The only real success stories ive seen with alcoholics is ones who address the depression. Once they have the depression under control the drinking problem resolves itself.

They will also be pushing religion and God on you, so if you are an atheist or agnostic, they are going to be putting alot of pressure on you. They of course try to downplay this publicly and say atheists are welcome, but most atheists or agnostics that have been through the program can tell you that they do in fact try to pressure them into submitting to God.
