Can You Give Me Info on Having the Talus in the Heel Surgically Fused?

Question by L T: Can you give me info on having the talus in the heel surgically fused?
Could you give me some estimate, even ballpark figures of what it costs for the surgery to fuse the ankle when the subtalar joint is damaged? Not just the surgery, but also the cost of the therapy for recovery as well if you know. Thank you.
F in Montana, age 40, no pre-existing conditions and non smoker.

Ok, a couple of questions before I can answer….

What part of the country do you live in?
How old are you? Are you M/F?
Do you have any pre-existing conditions? Diabetes, hypertension, etc?
Do you smoke

Ok, assuming you will have this outpatient or 23 hour stay (or one overnight) cost will be about $ 9578 (this includes, surgeon, facility fee, anesthesia, and pre-ops), plus rehab. Since you are 40, and I assume in good health, and a non smoker, you should fuse without any problems. You will probably be in a splint (or sometimes a cast) anywhere from 8-12 weeks, then you will progressed to weight bearing. (You will need crutches during this time, cost: about $ 110 for a good pair ) Some ortho’s give a SACH foot that will help with your gait/walking when the cast is off. They cost about 90.00 a piece.

You will need physical therapy after the surgery, anywhere from 12-24 visits. Allow an average of 100.00 -140.00 per visit for physical therapy sessions.

Your fist 1-2 follow up visits with the orthopedic surgeon should be included with his surgery fee, however, after that, expect to pay for the office visits -75-90 dollars) plus x-rays (about 45.00 per view – will probably take 2 views with each visit)

Also, pain medications post discharge: approximately 50.00 depending on what is prescribed and what your pain needs are.
If your doc knows you are cruising on limited funds, don’t feel bad about asking him for sample medicaiton that you won’t have to pay for.

If you will be cash for all of these services, make sure you tell everyone up front that you will be “FEE FOR SERVICE”. You may get a different price for things.
