How Do You to Respond to Verbal Taunts and Insults?

Question by Oriana: How do you to respond to verbal taunts and insults?
I guess in many ways it depends on the individual/group and the circumstances involved but I have noticed most people respond in 3 ways:

* reply something as insulting and degrading back
* give then the “brick wall treatment” by simply ignoring then
* simply smile back at them

but what works best you think?, i mean does keeping your cool make a difference?

Yeah, keeping your cool is important, although I don’t think it always reflects badly on you to become angry at nasty people. But for your OWN sake perhaps it’s best keep it cool, no need to confront ever jerk.

I tend to do #1 and so I know how much trouble it causes me. Also look how much trouble it causes on this very website. It takes a lot of effort for me and others like me to respond in a way other than the destructive perpetuating number 1.

ignoring.
they’ll get bored.

if you insult them back, it wont stop. they’ll either taunt you because your come backs were lame, or do everything in their power to beat you.
giving a smile will aggravate them and may lead to physical violence
