How to Deal With a Dog Who Is Scared of People?

Question by Aleksandar: How to deal with a dog who is scared of people?
Today I adopted female samoyed from dog shelter. She is 5 years old and in very good state. They warned me tho that she is very scared of people. Her previous owner said that she could only, and I repeat only tolerate him and his wife. She was extremely scared of everyone else. We had a little trouble to take her to the outside but when we opened car door she jumped right into the car and was very calm on the way to my house (she appears to like to be driven ). When we arrived home I introduced her to my other dog, male samoyed 2 years old and she appeared to have no trouble with him,. In fact from first moment they acted like they grown up together, but still she remains scared of me and my family. She never shown that she is aggressive at all, but she is scared of every sound we make near her and if we try to approach her she tries to escape like her life depends on it. I need some help and advice how to calm her down and perhaps remove her fears. I’m ready to invest much time in her “rehabilitation” because I believe she deserves a second chance and, unlike her owners, I don’t plan to give up on her. Any help would be appreciated.
