A physical therapist is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of people who have functional impairments either due to disease, injury or developmental anaomolies, etc.

As an example, a physician may refer a patient to PT with a diagnosis of “shoulder pain.” The physical therapist will evaluate what are potential causes of the pain (ligament, labrum, tendon, abnormal joint mechanics, etc) and take measurement baselines (range of motion, strength, functional tests, etc). They will then design a treatment program (strengthening, stretching, etc) and implement it or direct the assistant to perform the treatment.

National average salary is about $ 66,000…however, you have to realize that the typical physical therapist has been practicing less than 10 years and this may not represent a true “average” salary. New graduate salary is about $ 51,000, but more than 25% of PTs in the field make more than $ 75,000.

It does require a lot of education (most programs in the US are now doctorate (DPT) programs and take 6-7 years to complete. Entrance into PT school is quite competitive and requires a lot of science and an excellent GPA.

The field was once named one of the top 3 most satisfying careers and job prospects are expected to continue to grow much faster than average.
