Review of 61 Studies of Patients?

Question by sanko: review of 61 studies of patients?
According to a review of 61 studies of patients
suffering from severely debilitating depression, a
large majority of the patients reported that missing a
night’s sleep immediately lifted their depression. Yet
sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression even
though the conventional treatments, which use drugs
and electric shocks, often have serious side effects

Look at this line
“Yet sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression….”

sleep-deprivation means no sleep………..so do they mean if a person is not allowed to sleep then there will be no depression ?

i don’t understand these lines below .
“Yet
sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression even
though the conventional treatments, which use drugs
and electric shocks, often have serious side effects”

electric shock ! can electric shock reduce depression ?
can no sleep reduce depression ?
can no sleep caused by drugs reduce depression ?

Already patients claimed no sleep caused depression.

This means that “although” missing sleep is reported as helping reduce depression, this is NOT used ( is NOT used) as treatment for depression.

Instead, conventional treatments often use “drugs” and
“electric shocks” which have SERIOUS side effects.

The tone seems to be AGAINST the conventional treatments that sound like they cause more problems.

NOTE: where did you get the sentence
“Already patients claimed no sleep caused depression”

1. If this was in the article, then it would seem that
sleeplessness was associated with both the cause and the relief of the depression. I can see why you are confused if the article presents contradictory statements. I would need to see the full context to see if it changed or not, between these two statements that seem to conflict with each other.

2. If this was not in the article, the tone seems to “imply” that “perhaps” more research could be done on sleep patterns to see if there is a positive effect of missing sleep on ending depression sooner or not.
Except for your last sentence, the statements seemed to be in favor of research into sleep regulation as a possible treatment for depression INSTEAD of drugs/shocks that have negative side effects.

does this help anyway?
