At first, her mom didn’t know if her moodiness was typical preteen behavior or something worse. When Sam began threatening to kill herself, her mother, Tammi Potter, knew she needed help. She called her pediatrician, who referred her to Cincinnati Children’s. They started out in the Emergency Department and ended up at the medical center’s College Hill campus, which treats kids with chronic mental health problems. Today, Sam is doing better. She is smiling more and focusing her energy on building a foundation, Rob’s Kids, in honor of her dad. She wants to help other kids dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts. Does It Seem to You the “treatment” for Mental Illness Is Just Making the Person Sleep?

Question by Gabesky: Does it seem to you the “treatment” for mental illness is just making the person sleep? A friend of mine pointed something out to me, the intended effect of most psychiatric drugs is to sedate the person which of course will make them sleepy all the time. It is true in my case at least. I’m on 4 medications, 3 of which are sedatives. It makes me wonder if that is the way psychiatrists think it “fixes” the person, just putting them to sleep so they don’t have to deal with the issues so much. Just thinking of that makes me want to stop my meds, i don’t want to sleep my life away. Your thoughts on this? Thanks. Read more... ...
