What Defines a Drug Addict or a Alcoholic?

Question by Kac: What defines a drug addict or a alcoholic?
Is it when someone decides to stop drinking or doing drugs, but only to break their promise to them self or their family? Or when they wish people would just mind their own business? What about drinking or doing drugs in the morning? And when they say they can stop using any time they want, even though they keep getting high? And denial, the famous words, “I’m not addicted.”
It not me my ex/baby’s daddy is. Well clams he has stopped, but he has told me this in the past and always has gone back. Pot, coke, acid, and alcohol.

If you want a psychological perspective addiction according to diagnostic criteria is as follows…

:

One or more of the following:

* FAILURE TO FULFILL MAJOR OBLIGATIONS
* USE WHEN PHYSICALLY HAZARDOUS
* RECURRENT LEGAL PROBLEMS
* RECURRENT SOCIAL OR INTERPERSONAL PROBLEMS

With SUBSTANCE ABUSE the user has a choice: he/she uses in spite of illegal, unsafe consequences, or inappropriateness of the drinking/drugging experience.

SUBSTANCE DEPENDENCE (ADDICTION/ALCOHOLISM)

Three or more of the following:

* TOLERANCE
* WITHDRAWAL
* LARGE AMOUNTS OVER A LONG PERIOD
* UNSUCCESSFUL EFFORTS TO CUT DOWN
* TIME SPENT IN OBTAINING THE SUBSTANCE REPLACES SOCIAL, OCCUPATIONAL OR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
* CONTINUED USE DESPITE ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES

The terms “addiction” “dependence” and “alcoholism” are interchangeable. They are characterized by impaired control over drug use – in other words, the question to the user is: “Did you continue to behave in a manner that has previously caused problems for you?”

The relationship with the drug becomes primary – it is like a consuming love affair – it becomes the most important relationship for the individual and all decisions made are based on the maintenance of this relationship.

Hope this helps

What you have written is the definition of an alcoholic or a drug addict. If you are an adult Alcoholics Anonymous is the answer for help in stopping the addiction. If it is drugs than Narcotics Anonymous is the answer. With these groups you will be with people who have the same problem many with lots of years of recovery who can help you. You cannot stop taking the substances abrubtly as you will go into withdrawal if you have been doing it for any amount of time. The first thing you need to do is see your doctor he can determine the safest way to help your body through the withdrawal symptoms usually with other safe medications for a short while. Please you have gone so far as to write your question now please make the next step and get help. If you are young you can talk to your school counselor about it they are trained to help you and refer you to help. Do not be embarrassed or ashamed as this happens to many and all doctors and school counselors have seen this problem. Please get help!
