Is It Legal to Create a “Senior Living Facility” in One’s Home?

Question by Solstice: Is it legal to create a “senior living facility” in one’s home?
A friend of mine is actually planning to rent out rooms in his house to seniors, as an alternative to traditional assisted living/skilled nursing facilities. He plans to provide his residents with daily yoga exercises (his latest girlfriend is a yoga instructor) instead of and medicine.

My question: what are the legal liabilities for something like this? I know people have the choice to live wherever they choose, but what if one of the residents breaks a hip while attempting the lotus position? I’m serious — I really don’t know what the ramifications might be. There’s a good reason most reputable senior living facilities have trained medical professionals on staff, NOT self-proclaimed “experts” with a $ 200 license to teach yoga.
@ Erin — that’s just the problem! He doesn’t plan to apply for any licenses.

If he is going to charge then he had better have all the licenses and approval from the local council else he is going to regret his $ 200.00 license for yoga

tell your friend to have some kind of written outline of what they need to know. like, they cant sue them if they break something doing yoga, or if something gets stolen. if they sign it, and they try to sue them for whatever reason, they have proof that they agreed to their ‘rules’.
