*URGENT* I Want to Change Doctors. How Can I Do This Before It’s Too Late?

Question by : *URGENT* I want to change doctors. How can I do this before it’s too late?
I’m 17, a senior in high school. I recently writ a ‘depressing’ poem for homework for my English class at high school. My teachers did not take it lightly and reported it to my doctors, who now think I’m suicidal. I’m no where close to suicidal, and never will be. This poem I wrote was just something off of the top of my head. I was simply making an homage to my favorite rapper. Apparently this isn’t acceptable. The poem included a knife and a gun (in which I don’t even own).

My father died before I was born and his birthday was January 8th. This greatly affected me as well as the fact that my grandmother died a few months prior to this day (“this day” being Monday, January 16, 2012). I had also been listening to the song “Bastard ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFTLouiUFjI )” and “Inglorious ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10iYnSiT6qs )” by ‘Tyler, the Creator,’ which happens to be my favorite rapper.

I wrote this poem on January the 11th and turned it in as homework on the 12th. On the 13th, I was suspended due to my doctors being skeptical and thought that I meant what I wrote. Of course, I didn’t mean what I wrote, but now my doctor is trying to put me into a Mental Healthcare center as if I’m actually suicidal. He’s trying to put me in a program where I go to the Mental Hospital to substitute for school. I won’t be able to see my friends this way. I want to see my friends or else I *will* be depressed. This plan of my doctor’s is backfired. What’s the point of treating “depression” if the treatment is depressing itself?

This makes me very upset and very sad. I want to change my doctor so I don’t have to go through this.

I’m very sorry for what I said. I just want to go back to what my life was like last week. Someone PLEASE help.

I think you have to give your consent before you go in. Any doctor will most likely be the same. Let them know what you just said.

In the US your Dr. can admit you to a mental health facility if he feels you are harmful to yourself or others without your consent. This is generally a “72 hour hold” to have time to evaluate if you are a danger to yourself or others. He may (but not always) have to go to court over this to get it ordered by a judge. The judge can make the final decision but he is more inclined to trust the Dr. rather than you. If you were not seen by a psychiatrist I would ask to see one. Only a psychiatrist can evaluate if you are really suicidal or just “expressing” yourself in your poem. I would ask to see a psychiatrist to get the real reason behind your poem. You don’t want the history of being in a psych hospital to follow you around the rest of your life if it is not true. The other side of this is that with the high rate of teen suicide everyone is on the alert and trying to avoid this from happening. Your best bet is a psychiatrist since they are the only Dr.s trained to know true depression vs. teen expression. Ask for one.Good luck.
